Dagoberto Gilb: A Lust for Life, Down &Dirty
At a local Chicano restaurant in Austin, Tex., Dagoberto Gilb munches on tortillas, refried beans and runny eggs. Vibrant colors dance above his head, the swirling blues and reds and yellows of a mural on the wall. Suddenly, a lithe and lovely young woman--chestnut eyes, black silky hair, incandescent smile--squeezes behind him to use the pay phone. Gilb's face lights up.
"We're going listen if you call from this phone," he tells her, then laughs--hearty, broad, bouncy and thoroughly contagious.
"Oh, it's not going to be exciting," the girl says, gamely chuckling.
"Aww, man," Gilb not so quietly exclaims. "Well, I'll loan you a quarter if you call someone exciting, so I can listen to that." He belts out another hoarse, boisterous cackle. The girl again giggles, though a bit more apprehensively this time. Gilb relents, lets the woman make her call. If the author has learned anything in the 50 years he's been on this planet, it's when to rein in his irrepressible personality. BIOGRAPHICAL NOTE
Writer Dagoberto Gilb was born in Los Angeles. "My mother was Mexican, my father was of German descent. That's the future of this country. This kind of mestizaje is what we have, the culture we're creating," (Los Angeles Times, 2/12/). Gilb's mother and father divorced when he was a toddler and he was raised by his mother. After high school, Gilb enrolled in junior college. "When I got to college, I loved it. It changed my life I just went nuts over books." (Publishers Weekly, 1/15/).
Gilb graduated from the University of California at Santa Barbara in with a double major in Philosophy and Religious Studies. In , he earned a master's degree in Religious Studies. It was one of those days when Dagoberto Gilb was about to start a scandal, and he needed some advice. Anyone could see that he was seething with anger. Lots of people get involved when he is this way; he gets mad at institutions. Gilb is a huge hulk of a man, barrel-chested, stout, and known for always, always saying what is on his mind. Ten years ago, when he was living in El Paso but happened to be in Austin, he wanted to get to the bottom of something that had been bothering him for some time. When he walked into the office of The Texas Observer, which had published some personal essays he had written, he was standing in front of a group of people who knew that when Dagoberto Gilb flips out, it's best to just get out of the way. "Who's the editor?" he barked. Gilb wanted to know his position on a matter that had been bothering him: Would it really ruin his writing career if he punched the editor of Texas Monthly in the face? Erick is the son of a single mother, a Mexican-American immigrant. She works low-paying jobs but is very beautiful, and men are always hitting on her and giving her things. She goes out with a lot of them. Erick doesn't like it and never speaks. She says to them it's because he doesn't speak English well, even though he does. He only speaks to his friend Albert, who has a large family.
At one point, his mom is dating an incredibly wealthy engineer she works for. Erick tells Albert the engineer is his new dad. Then, he dumps and fires his mom, and she starts dating a Mexican-American man named Roque again, who is incredibly kind and doting. Erick tells Albert he's his Uncle Rock, since he doesn't want to say he lied about the engineer being his dad. Though he doesn't specifically say it, it's clear he dislikes Roque because he wanted his mother to marry the engineer. He stops being friends with Albert after it becomes apparent he lied.
