RENOWNED PLAYWRIGHT: Armidale educated Dymphna Cusack travelled the World during her writing career
From time to time in this column I have commented on the many writers with connections. Dymphna Cusack () is another such writer.
Dymphna Cusack was born in 11 September at Wyalong, the third of six surviving children of Beatrice and James Cusack. The combination of straightened family circumstances with the girls ill-health led to her being brought up by her childless aunt and uncle, Nell and Tom Leahy at Guyra.
Dymphna was very much alone during those bush years apart from her Aunt and Uncle and her cat, William Adolphus. However she loved animals, fishing and time spent outdoors. Her uncle was a keen fisherman, and they often went fishing together. Later, she would live in many great cities across the world, but she remained a bush girl at heart.
The child read omnivorously. She also discovered a love of teaching when the headmaster at Guyra Primary (what a man! what a teacher!) let her take over lower classes when their teachers were away.

Dymphna Cusack was a courageous social reformer in mid-twentieth century Australia and an activist for world peace from until her death in Her books and plays dealt with the dominant political issues of the times as they were refracted through the lives of ordinary people.
A Sydney University Arts graduate with honours in History and the new discipline of Psychology, Cusack taught in high schools across NSW for almost two decades. In she was appointed one of the first Vocational Guidance Counsellors at Sydney Girls' High School; from her plays (and poems) won prizes and were broadcast on radio; her first novel Jungfrau was published in Her "tall poppy" status inevitably brought detractors and in December , following her victory in a groundbreaking Workers' Compensation case against the NSW Department of Education, Cusack was transferred to a supernumerary position at Bathurst High School. Her collaborator (Pioneers on Parade, ) and mentor Miles Franklin advised her to look at it as "a grand chance to turn the tables", which she did with her classic female staff-room bitchiness play Morning Sacrifice.
