De uitvinding van de telescoop wordt vaak toegeschreven aan de Middelburgse lenzenslijper Hans Lippershey. In vroeg deze Zeeuw octrooi aan op een instrument ‘om verre te sien’.
Of Lippershey daadwerkelijk de eerste was die een telescoop maakte, wordt wel betwijfeld. Vaak wordt ook de naam van Lippershey&#;s buurman genoemd: Zacharias Jansen. Die ontwikkelde rond dezelfde tijd namelijk ook een kijker. En ook Jacob Metius wordt soms genoemd als uitvinder van de telescoop. Feit is dat deze Alkmaarse opticien ook een kijker ontwikkelde, maar hij vroeg enkele weken na Lippershey bij de Staten-Generaal patent aan op zijn uitvinding, waardoor zijn aanvraag werd afgewezen. Hans Lippershey (also known as Jan Lippersheim or Hans Lippersheim) was a Dutch inventor of the 16th century, most commonly associated with the invention of the world’s first telescope. Born in Wesel, West Germany in , Lippershey moved to the prosperous city of Middleburg in the province of Zeeland in the Netherlands in This was also the year that he was married. He was a spectacle maker by profession and set up his own shop in Zeeland. He was made a citizen of Zeeland in Lippershey became a master at his art and was known to be an expert “lens grinder”.
How the idea of the invention of the telescope came to Lippershey is not clearly known. New glass making techniques were introduced by the Italians in the s which contributed to this development. According to one version of events, Lippershey observed two children playing with optical lenses in his shop and the children commented during their play that a far away object (such as a weather vane) seemed much closer when viewed through two lenses placed one on top of the other. Biografie
Lipperhey trouwde in te Middelburg met Fanne Cools Jansdochter uit Antwerpen met wie hij tenminste zeven kinderen had. Pas in werd hij poorter van de stad.[1] Lipperhey vestigde zich als brillenslijper te Middelburg in het Kapoenstraatje, in het huis 'De dry vare gerichten'. Hier legde hij zich evenals de vlakbij woonachtige Zacharias Janssen in het begin van de 17de eeuw toe op het samenstellen van verrekijkers en trachtte zijn constructie in de loop der jaren steeds verder te vervolmaken, onder andere door binoculaire kijkers te vervaardigen, waarmee hij op 2 oktober als eerste bij de Staten-Generaal een patent aanvroeg voor een seecker instrument om verre te sien.[2] Een portret, ontleend aan Borellus, 'De vero telescopii inventore', is in de Zelandia Illustrata aanwezig.
