His father, Shinmen Munisai , was an accomplished martial artist and master of the sword and jutte (also jitte).Munisai, in turn, was the son of Hirata Shgen , a vassal of Shinmen Iga no Kami, the lord of Takayama Castle in the Yoshino district of Mimasaka was relied upon by Lord Shinmen, and so was allowed to use the Shinmen name. His story, which has become the basis for countless flying swordsman Oriental movies, is one of raw courage, unbridled ambition and unparalleled mindfulness. Beginnings
There is much uncertainty over the details and dates pertaining to the life of Musashi. What follows is based primarily on his own account as recorded in The Book of Five Rings. Miyamoto Musashi was born in the spring of in the village of Miyamoto in the Yoshino District of Mimisaka Province in Japan. He was born into nobility, with his mother, who died giving birth to him, being the daughter of a minor local chieftain. His father, Muni was a warrior in the Shin Man clan, who had become an expert in the fighting arts. He was especially adept in jiu jitsu, swordsmanship and the use of the jitta, an iron rod with forklike protrusions.

Miyamoto Musashi (宮本 武蔵, c. – 13 June ), also known as Shinmen Takezō, Miyamoto Bennosuke or, by his Buddhist name, Niten Dōraku, was a Japanese swordsman, philosopher, strategist, writer and rōnin[1†]. He became renowned through stories of his unique double-bladed swordsmanship and undefeated record in his 61 duels[1†]. Musashi, as he was often simply known, is considered a Kensei, a sword-saint of Japan[1†]. He was the founder of the Niten Ichi-ryū, or Nito Ichi-ryū, style of swordsmanship[1†]. In his final years, he authored The Book of Five Rings (五輪の書, Go Rin No Sho) and Dokkōdō (獨行道, The Path of Aloneness)[1†]. Both documents were given to Terao Magonojō, the most important of Musashi’s students, seven days before Musashi’s death[1†].
Early Years and Education
Miyamoto Musashi was born in in the Miyamoto village in Harima Province[3†]. He was the son of Shinmen Munisai, a martial artist and master of the sword and jutte[3†]. Musashi had an unusually large build, and a childhood case of severe eczema left his face severely scarred[3†][4†].
When Musashi turned seven, he was raised by his uncle Dorinbo at the Shoreian temple[3†][5†]
