The Crows&#; traditional homeland is the Yellowstone River Valley and a generous swath of land surrounding it. They were bordered on their west and north by the Blackfeet, on their south by the Cheyenne, and their east by the Sioux, all of whom were once a very territorial and warlike people. Wars between the tribes were common. And as they became more common, they evolved into something sophisticated and formal, something almost game-like, with their own rules and reward system.
The mids to the late s was an era of warriors and war chiefs. A warrior’s greatest honor, and thus his greatest aspiration, was to become a war chief. But this was no easy task. A tribe would have had one main leader, also called a chief, but this was different than being a war chief. A tribe could have and often did have many war chiefs,all the men in the tribe who had proven themselves by completing the four war deeds.

Who is Joe Medicine Crow?
Joseph Medicine Crow is a Crow historian and author. He is also an enrolled member of the Crow Nation of Native Americans. His writings on Native American history and reservation culture are considered seminal works, but he is best known for his writings and lectures concerning the Battle of Little Big Horn. He is a recipient of the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Bronze Star Medal, and the Légion d'honneur. During World War II he became the last war chief of the Crow Tribe, and today remains the last living Plains Indian war chief. The march has been growing and growing. In the U.S., I didn't feel identified with the white feminism of the Global North. I came back home, and it hit me how big this was. The feminist movement had been happening for a long time here in the Global South, especially in Latin America. There are 10 women that are killed every day in Mexico that go unnoticed, where there are no consequences. The reality for us here is very different, and I feel a different sense of responsibility, also being a business owner and being in charge of a team that at one point was mostly women. Right now, it's half and half, but there were moments, especially at the beginning, where it was 90% women and women who live different realities to mine at home in some cases, who were going through really bad cases of domestic violence and whose lives

Early Life & Education
Crow was born in Lodge Grass, Montana to parents Amy Yellowtail and Leo Medicine Crow. The family lived on the Crow Indian Reservation, and his father was a war chief. On his mother’s side, he was the nephew of White Man Runs, a brave soldier who had served as a scout for the US General George Armstrong Custer. White Man Runs also experienced the Battle of the Little Bighorn firsthand.
Growing up, Crow learned how to ride horses, hunt, and withstand below-freezing weather conditions. Life on the reservation wasn’t easy. The Crow tribe at the time had less than members after years of being plagued by starvation and disease. Many members of his family had to steal cattle in order to survive.
