Kirill Karabits

Kirill Karabits has been Chief Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra for 14 years and their relationship has been celebrated worldwide. Together they have made many critically acclaimed recordings, performed regularly at the BBC Proms and appeared together at London’s Barbican Centre as part of the Beethoven celebrations in the season.

Karabits has worked with many of the leading ensembles of Europe, Asia and North America, including the Cleveland, Philadelphia, San Francisco and Chicago Symphony orchestras, Munich Philharmonic, Orchestre National de France, Philharmonia Orchestra, Wiener Symphoniker, Rotterdam Philharmonic, Yomiuri Nippon Symphony Orchestra, Orchestra Filarmonica del Teatro La Fenice and the BBC Symphony Orchestra – including a concertante version of Bluebeard’s Castle at the Barbican Centre.

Biography

Ukranian conductor Kirill Karabits is in his sixth season as Principal Conductor of the Bournemouth Symphony Orchestra, Classic FM's Orchestra in the South of England. In he won the Conductor category at the prestigious Royal Philharmonic Society awards.

Kirill Karabits was born on 26 December in Kiev, Ukraine. His father was a conductor and composer.

Kirill studied piano and, by 13, developed an interest in conducting.

He studied at the National Tchaikovsky Music Academy. In , he went to the Vienna Musikhochschule, gaining a diploma in conducting.

He has done scholarly work in archives, such as transcribing the Johannes Passion of C.P.E. Bach, which was thought to be lost.

Who or what inspired you to take up conducting and pursue a career in music?

I would say it was a mixture of circumstances: parents, musicians, the environment in which I grew up, and an intuitive love for music and instruments. I was just a normal child until the turning point at the age of 13, when I made the decision to pursue a career in music (as a conductor). It engaged a personal responsibility for that decision, which was —and still remains —a motor in my professional life.

Who or what are the most significant influences on your musical life?

My father, who was a prominent Ukrainian composer, Ivan Karabits, and my teachers at the music academies in Kiev, Vienna and the Bach Academy Stuttgart. Today, I hugely respect musicians and personalities that remain true to themselves and “serve music” rather than their personal careers and ambitions. Artists I respect include: Yuri Temirkanov, Ivan Fischer, Mikhail Pletnev and a few others.
