LOW Taek Jho or Jho Low was undoubtedly the puppet master behind the world’s biggest-ever financial fraud. But he needed people he could trust absolutely to pull it off, including operating bank accounts in Singapore and Switzerland where much of the billions of 1Malaysia Development Bhd money was laundered. The key person appears to have been Eric Tan Kim Loong. At one stage, it was thought that Tan, who was not an employee of 1MDB, was Jho Low using a fake name.
Last week, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) produced a photograph of Tan, who is now wanted not just by Malaysia but also Singapore.
We pieced together information from the US Department of Justice and the Malaysian Auditor-General’s Report to explain what Tan did, as well as the role played by two 1MDB executives wanted by MACC — Casey Tang Keng Chee and Jasmine Loo Ai Swan.

KUALA LUMPUR (May 27): Fugitive businessman Low Taek Jho (Jho Low) was a “puppet master” who made decisions and controlled 1Malaysia Development Bhd (1MDB) when it came to strategy and operations, the High Court was told on Monday.
Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) senior investigating officer Nur Aida Arifin — who was testifying as the prosecution’s 49th witness at the 1MDB-Tanore trial here — agreed with suggestions from lead defence lawyer Tan Sri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah that Jho Low had pulled the strings in 1MDB despite being a nobody in the company.
Shafee: In your witness statement you said Jho Low was the pencatur, what do you mean? Do you mean he was acting as the puppet master in 1MDB?
Nur Aida: Yes, I agree. Jho Low was the ‘puppet master’ in how 1MDB conducted its business operations.

KUALA LUMPUR — While Low Taek Jho is the best-known name linked to the 1Malaysia Development Bhd scandal, details of four other individuals jointly charged with the Penang-born businessman at the Kuala Lumpur Sessions Court on Tuesday (Dec 4) remain sketchy.
The four — Tang Keng Chee, Loo Ai Swan, Geh Choh Heng and Tan Kim Loong — may not enjoy Low’s infamy but have been on the wanted list of the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) for a long time.
The hunt for the four individuals began in June when the MACC sought them for questioning over investigations into the embezzlement of 1MDB funds.
And after efforts to locate them failed, the Kuala Lumpur magistrates’ court yesterday issued fresh arrest warrants against all five.
