Lygia Pape and the renewal of Brazilian art
Lygia Pape is of the same artistic generation and aesthetic affiliation as Lygia Clark and Hélio Oiticica, and like them, she was a member of the Grupo Frente (), the core of the Concretist movement in Rio de Janeiro. Throughout the s, along with the other artists of this group, she developed poetic differences with the São Paulo concretists, until they split into a dissident Neoconcrete faction, which in became formalized in a manifesto and an exhibition. Pape is accordingly one of the most important artists in Brazilian history. Along with Clark and Oiticica, she was in the forefront of the most creative avant-garde that Brazil has ever seen. The resonance of her work cannot be fully understood without acknowledging the contribution of her experimental disquiet to that founding moment of Brazilian contemporary art.
In a recently published text about the work of Pape, A Lógica da Teia (The Logic of the Cobweb), English critic Guy Brett notes that “It was this rebellious spirit in the

Lygia Pape (–) was one of the most acclaimed and influential Brazilian artists of the twentieth century. As a prominent member of a generation of artists, architects, and designers who embraced the optimistic and constructive spirit of postwar Brazil, she is particularly known for her participation in the experimental art movement Neoconcretism, which sought to rework the legacy of European avant-garde abstraction to suit a new cultural context. Beyond the specific aims of Neoconcretism, however, Pape engaged with a wide range of media painting, drawing, poetry, graphic design and photography, film and performance—constantly experimenting in a quest to confront the canonical and discover unexplored territories in modern art. Following a coup d’etat in , when the establishment of an authoritarian regime shattered dreams of shared prosperity in Brazil, Pape continued to pursue her art against difficult odds. The streets of Rio de Janeiro became her ultimate source of inspiration, as she created particip
Lygia Pape
One of the most relevant figures in the history of modern and contemporary art in Brazil, Lygia Pape worked in a variety of media, including painting, sculpture, printmaking, film, and performance art. She was known for her use of geometric shapes and vibrant colors, and for her exploration of the relationships between space, time, and the human body.
Pape was a member of the Grupo Frente from the early s, alongside artists such as Hélio Oiticica, Lygia Clark, Franz Weissmann, and Ivan Serpa, playing a key role in the development of concretism. Her works from this period stand out for the artist's transgressive approach to abstraction and for her questioning of the excessively rationalist tendency of concretism, which turned to industrial materials and techniques. The famous series of prints Tecelares, produced between and , demonstrates Pape’s approximation to handcraft, which opposed the rigid geometry of concrete art at the time. In these works, the geometric line both dominates and integrates the lines of the wood knot.
A pioneer in the creation of artist's books, Pape developed several series based on the book format, in which she explored the poss
