Welcome to Art Works, the program that goes behind the scenes with some of the nation’s great artists to explore how art works. I’m your host Josephine Reed.
It’s really no surprise that the first and only group NEA Jazz Master’s award went to the renowned Marsalis family, a family that’s produced one excellent musician after the next, numbering five in all.
Delfeayo, the third musical son in the acclaimed family -- after Branford and Wynton, is one of the top trombonists and producers working in jazz today.
Performing internationally with some of the great bandleaders, like Slide Hampton, Max Roach, and Elvin Jones, Delfeayo developed his musical chops both on the stage and in the studio. From an early age, he was interested in producing music that preserved an acoustic jazz sound. The recordings he produced for his brother Branford in the s using a rich acoustic bass sound as opposed to the amped up bass direct—was key in changing jazz recording techniques. In fact, Delfeayo’s production work earned him a Grammy
From a tender young age it was clear that Jason Marsalis had what it took to be great. Jason is the son of pianist and music educator Ellis Marsalis and his wife Dolores, and the youngest sibling of Wynton, Branford and Delfeayo. Together, the four brothers and their patriarch Ellis, comprise New Orleans venerable first family of jazz.
Ellis and Dolores began to cultivate Jason’s interest in music at age three, with the purchase of a toy set of drums. Jason is fond of telling the story of a game he and his parents would play with the drums. “When I was three, my parents bought me a toy drum set and the used to introduce me to an
imaginary audience. They would say, ‘Ladies and gentleman introducing the fabulous Jason!’ and I would come out and start banging away much to my parents delight. I too enjoyed it to the point that I started to go up to my parents unsolicited and say, ‘Dad, introduce me again!’”
By age six, not only had Jason gotten his first real drum set, but he was also taking lessons from the legendary New Orleans drummer James Black. At age seven he was sitting in with his father’s jazz group, as well as playingwith his trombonist brother Delfeayo. Jason was prog

(Most of) The Marsalis Family in Concert
Theres no generation gap in the musical taste of the Marsalis family of New Orleans. From the year-old patriarch and pianist, Ellis Marsalis, down to the year-old drummer Jason, the hard-bop of the late s and 60s is the pinnacle of jazz, and they have led a revival of the style among young musicians.
The best-known family members, the year-old trumpeter Wynton and the year-old saxophonist Branford, have an international reputation for meticulous, probing compositions and improvisations. Their chosen idiom reaches from standards and be-bop tunes to the border of Ornette Colemans free jazz. And as usual at a Marsalis concert, the music sounded well rehearsed, with fine-tuned ensembles.
The family members rarely perform together now that Wynton and Branford Marsalis lead their own groups. So a concert on Wednesday night at Alice Tully Hall offered an unusual chance to hear Ellis, Wynton, Branford and (for the first time) Jason perform together, bolstered by Wynton Marsaliss regular septet; missing from the family roster was Delfeayo Marsalis, a trombonist. The concert was a benefit for Graham-Windham (a private child-
