Who Was Abraham Lincoln?

Abraham Lincoln was the 16thpresident of the United States, serving from to , and is regarded as one of America’s greatest heroes due to his roles in guiding the Union through the Civil War and working to emancipate enslaved people. His eloquent support of democracy and insistence that the Union was worth saving embody the ideals of self-government that all nations strive to achieve. In , he issued the Emancipation Proclamation, which freed slaves across the Confederacy. Mzwakhe Mbuli, the “People’s Poet,” was born into a poor Zulu family in Sophiatown on 1 August   His parents were Roselinah Msuthukazi Mbuli, a Xhosa woman, and Elijah Katali, a Zulu man who was employed as a long-distance driver. In , the town was bulldozed and Mbuli’s family, which included seven brothers and sisters, was forcibly removed to Soweto.  Mbuli’s training in traditional mbube singing came from his father, who often took him to long mbube sessions conducted by workers.  He also attended local and school based theatre groups in addition to other Zulu dance and music events throughout his youth.

The Soweto Uprising occurred on 16 June and was a very formative experience for the young Mbuli.  After experiencing the death of his fellow students, Mbuli’s school went on strike and he was encouraged to write poetry during this time.  Mbuli refers to this event as “God’s miracle” because of how crucial it was for forming his opinions and beginning his career.  As a member of his first performance group, Khuyhangano, Mbuli performed for the Congress of South African Students(COSAS) in , a group he wou

Mzwakhe Mbuli became known as the "people's poet" as a result of the style and content of his poetry. He covered issues like drugs and Apartheid and the former government banned his work, forcing him to retreat from public life. Mbuli was honoured by being asked to introduce former President Nelson Mandela at his inauguration in It has been suggested that Mbuli's life came under threat several times as a result of his outspoken campaigning. Attempts were allegedly made to murder him in and he believes that, after complaining about the police's lack of action regarding the issue, he was tricked into going to Pretoria in to get information about the assassination attempt with the aim to frame him for armed robbery. Mbuli says that, on his arrival in Pretoria, someone put a bag filled with weapons in his car after which he and his two friends were immediately arrested for the robbery of a bank. Many people supported Mbuli throughout this, visiting him in prison and filling the court at his trial. South African musician and activist Mzwakhe Mbuli was born in a suburb of Johannesburg at the height of the country’s apartheid rule.

His love and inspiration for traditional singing came from his father who encouraged him to attend Zulu dance and music events when he was a young man.

He became well-known in the s through his often underground and political albums. In , he recorded Change is Pain, which was banned by the apartheid government for its influence among revolutionary groups.
