Peter Clarke was a British cartoonist.
Career
Clarke&#;s caricatures, described by one critic as “wicked perversions”, appeared in The Guardian newspaper where he was the staff cartoonist. Clarke wrote and illustrated the best seller Touchdown on the Moon, an account of the Apollo 11 moon landing which sold million copies in three languages. Clarke was the youngest (26 yo) political cartoonist ever appointed to a national newspaper in the United Kingdom. Skilled in conventional pen and ink technique, he also worked in other media.
Clarke introduced the Apple Macintosh Graphics computer into The Guardian.
He exhibited in many modern art exhibitions in the United Kingdom and abroad, including the John Moores Biennial, Britain’s pre-eminent, competitive show of modern painting. Clarke was also commissioned by the Zambian Government to paint an official portrait of President Kenneth Kaunda.
Clarke appeared on television on The Late Show and as a writer and presenter of What The Papers Say. Married with four children, he died on 16 December in Norfolk, England, United Kingdom.

But he also has a literary side as an internationally acclaimed writer and poet. Of these three roles, he jokes: &#;Had I been triplets, it would have made it much easier because each could have his own jobÉ There are times when I go through a writing phase and there are times for phases of picture-making but there is never a dull moment.&#;
Clarke is best known for his graphic prints, particularly his woodcuts, and more recently he has moved into collage. He also uses leather, glass, found objects and other mixed media to produce his colourful work.
Born in Simons Town in , Clarke&#;s artistic career spans many decades and he has unsurprisingly produced a large number of works and appeared in many exhibitions. Nevertheless, commentators generally feel that despite this experience and exposure, his work is not given the full recognition it deserves.

Peter Clarke (–) is an artist whose contribution to the canon of South African art history cannot be underestimated. Born and raised in the coastal town of Simonstown, Clarke’s first employment was as a dockworker in the area. However, having attended the District Six Art Group as a teenager, Clarke had already developed great skill as a draughtsman, and he began to receive commissions to create illustrations for various publications. In he made the decision to pursue a career as an artist.
In , Clarke was granted a special permit to attend an etching course at the Michaelis School of Fine Art. As a person of colour, under apartheid law Clarke was not permitted to study full-time at the institution. Between and , he studied at the prestigious Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam. Years later, in , he travelled to Oslo’s Atelier Nord where he participated in a graphic art workshop.
With his idiosyncratic simplicity of form, Clarke depicted the daily lives, customs and traditions of communities in the Cape with a great deal of humanity and empathy. He expertly tempered the small joys of daily life with his social and political criticisms of the apartheid regime.
Peter M Clarke MRSS trained at Camberwell College, London, and is a Member of the Royal Society of Sculptors. Working from his studio in Kent, he is surrounded by the flora and fauna which provide inspiration for symbolism, form and texture in his metal sculpture. He particularly loves copper because of its sensitivity to the texturing process and the range of colours obtained by applying heat or patinas. Each sculpture is unique, evolving as he draws onto the metal before cutting and hammering the piece into shape.
Exhibited widely, Peter's work has been collected throughout the UK, Europe, Australia, New Zealand and the USA, and public artworks include sculptures for hospitals and care homes, and even a certain famous pop icon! BBC and ITV television, books, colour supplements and magazines have all featured his work.
