The Early Years
By the time she was a junior in high school, Dorothy knew she wanted to become a Sister of Notre Dame, in particular a missionary to China. She never made it to China, but her journey did take her far from Dayton, Ohio, home.
A few years after taking her first vows she applied to a new school in Arizona. She was just 22 years old. Amongst her many talents, Sr. Dorothy surprised the boys by how well she could throw a football! In addition to teaching classes, praying and attending Mass each day, teaching religion classes to children in public schools, the Sisters were asked to minister to those living in migrant camps. It was in these camps that the Sisters saw the true face of poverty. People lived in shacks with dirt floors, no running water, no toilets and little food. Dorothy began to collect food and clothes for these workers and found that their plight would not leave her mind.

Sister Dorothy Stang decided early on that she would give her life to God as a Sister of Notre Dame de Namur. Her deepest desire was to serve the poor as a missionary and on her application she wrote, "I want to be a missionary in China."
But God's plan was not Dot's plan. After teaching in Chicago and Phoenix she was to serve in Brazil. She and four other Sisters went to Brazil in where she worked to help poor farmers build independent futures for their families until her murder in
The Fight Grows Dangerous
Over the years, the work became progressively more dangerous for the Sisters in Brazil and for the farmers and their families. As the world discovered the vast possibilities offered by the rich natural resources of the Amazon rain forest, people with more limited and self-centered goals began to plan ways to capitalize upon them. Gradually, loggers, ranchers, land speculators, and agribusiness became the dominant forces in the region, victimizing the poorer farmers and destroying the rain forest.

About Sister Dorothy Stang
A citizen of Brazil and the United States, Sister Dorothy spent nearly four decades defending the rights of poor settlers as well as working to save the rain forest from powerful ranchers bent on destroying it. On February 12, , less than a week after meeting with the country's human rights officials about threats to local farmers from loggers and landowners, she was shot by hired gunmen and left to die on a muddy country road. She was 73 years old.
Before her murder, Sister Dorothy was named "Woman of the Year" by the state of Para for her work in the Amazon region. She also received the Humanitarian of the Year award from the Brazilian Bar Association for her work helping the local rural workers. Her ministry partnered with the Pastoral Land Commission, an organization of the Catholic Church that fights for the rights of rural workers and peasants, and defends land reforms in Brazil.
Since her death, Sister Dorothy has been widely honored for her life and work by the United States Congress and by a number of colleges and universities across the United States. She was posthumously awarded the United Nations Prize in the

Sister Dorothy, 73, was born in Dayton, Ohio, one of nine children. She was raised on a farm in a traditional Catholic family. She entered the Congregation of the Sisters of Notre Dame de Namur in and professed final vows in From to , she taught elementary classes at St. Victor School in Calumet City, IL, St. Alexander School in Villa Park, IL and Most Holy Trinity School in Phoenix, Az. She began her ministry in Brazil in , in Coroata in the state of Maranhao. In , she moved to Anapu, about km south of Belém.
