Shakespeare
Shakespeare was born in Stratford-upon-Avon, England (about miles northwest of London, or a day trip during his life). Though his true birth date is unknown, it is commonly accepted as April 23, , based on the date of his baptism, April 26th.
Shakespeare had four sisters (only one survived) and four brothers (one was an actor).
He probably attended the King's New School in Stratford-upon-Avon, and would likely have been exposed to theater through traveling troupes.
Shakespeare married Anne Hathaway on November 28, , in the city of Worcester in Canterbury, England. He was 18; she was Anne was pregnant at the time, though this wasn’t very unusual.
The couple had three children: Susanna, and the twins Judith and Hamnet. Hamnet died when he was 11 years old.
Between the birth of the twins and , no records exist concerning Shakespeare’s life. Scholars call this seven year period “The Lost Years.”

Susanna Hall (nee Shakespeare) was the elder of Shakespeare’s two daughters. She was baptised on 26th May at Holy Trinity church in Stratford upon Avon and died on 11th July She married Dr John Hall in They had one child, Elizabeth. There are no descendants of William Shakespeare today.
When William Shakespeare and Anne Hathaway were married Anne was pregnant. They named the child Susanna – a name that may have had a meaning related to that pre-marital pregnancy. It’s the name the writer of the Book of Daniel in the Apocryphal Old Testament gave to the virginal young woman in the story in which two lecherous elders spy on her when she is bathing. Rejecting their advances, they accuse her of fornication. She appeals to the judge, Daniel, who investigates, finds her innocent, and sentences the elders to death.
“Susanna” means “spotless” or “pure.” Naming her in that way might have been the Shakespeares’ way of diverting attention from her parents’ premarital activities.

About the Item
During her lifetime, Susanna Hall, with the help of four men who acted as Trustees, had two legal documents drawn up. These were written to ensure the land and property that William Shakespeare had left her in his will would pass on to Susanna’s daughter Elizabeth after her death. Without these, everything would have passed out of her family and on to the next surviving male heir.
On the earlier settlement, Susanna’s signature and a wax impression of her seal can clearly be seen (below).
About Susanna Hall
Susanna was the eldest of Shakespeare’s children and baptised in , six months after her parents’ marriage. When she was born her grandfather was struggling with debt so her early childhood may have been a poor one. It is likely she either learned to read and write at ‘petty school’ or was taught by a tutor or family member as later documents show she could sign her name clearly.
