Booker Taliaferro was brought into the world on 5th April Unlike your birth story, Booker T&#;s birth was tied to slavery, right from day one. Growing up in Virginia, Taliaferro&#;s dad was an unknown irresponsible American who left Booker’s mother (Jane) to singly raise up the little hero. On his mum&#;s side, she worked on James Burroughs’s plantation as a cook. Taliaferro&#;s early days became more challenging when his mum remarried a fellow slave.
The Booker family lived in a horrible shelter which was in fact, a log cabin with a bare floor. It also served as their kitchen.

Who Was Booker T. Washington?
Born into slavery, Booker T. Washington put himself through school and became a teacher after the Civil War. In , he founded the Tuskegee Normal and Industrial Institute in Alabama (now known as Tuskegee University), which grew immensely and focused on training African Americans in agricultural pursuits. A political adviser and writer, Washington clashed with intellectual W.E.B. Du Bois over the best avenues for racial uplift.
Early Life
Born to an enslaved person on April 5, , Washington's life had little promise early on. In Franklin County, Virginia, as in most states prior to the Civil War, the child of an enslaved person also became enslaved. Washington's mother, Jane, worked as a cook for plantation owner James Burroughs. His father was an unknown white man, most likely from a nearby plantation. Washington and his mother lived in a one-room log cabin with a large fireplace, which also served as the plantation’s kitchen.
At an early age, Washington went to work carrying sacks of grain to the plantation’s mill. Toting pound sacks was hard work for a small boy, and he was beaten on occasion for not performing his

He founded an educational establishment in Alabama and promoted a philosophy of economic self-reliance and self-improvement for the black population. Born a slave, Washington grew up in a deeply racist and segregated society. Due to the deeply entrenched hostility, he felt it was necessary to accept segregated laws and concentrate on economic and cultural self-improvement. However, his conservative stance on race relations became increasingly criticised by a new generation of civil rights leaders who wished to be more assertive in challenging segregation and the Jim Crow Laws.
Washington is widely acknowledged for playing a significant role in promoting education for African-Americans and slowly raising the hopes and aspirations of an oppressed people.
