Bob Keeshan, an American television producer and actor, is best known as the main character of the children's television program "Captain Kangaroo," which became a favorite of millions of viewers during its 30 years on the air. He was also the first to play the role of clown Clarabell in the television program "Howdy Doody."
Early Life and Education
Robert James Keeshan was born on June 27, , in Lynbrook, New York, USA. During World War II, he enlisted in the United States Marine Corps Reserve in but remained in the United States until Japan's surrender. Bob attended Fordham University through the GI Bill, which provided veterans with vocational and technical education.

Television producer and host Robert James Keeshan was born in Lynbrook, Long Island, New York. As a young man he served in the US Marine Corps Reserve. Starting as a page at the National Broadcasting Company, Keeshan later began his on-air career as the original "Clarabell, the Clown" for the NBC The Howdy Doody Show () (aka "The Howdy Doody Show"). He was then the first host/performer of WJZ/WABC TV Ch. 7 NYC's "Time For Fun" / "The Johnny Jellybean Show". Keeshan emceed the show as "Corny The Clown" weekdays at noon from Monday, September 21st, , to Friday, July 29th, He co-created, co-produced and hosted "Tinker's Workshop" with Jack Miller on WJZ/WABC TV Ch. 7 in New York City weekday mornings from Monday, November 15, to Friday, September 9, The show continued without Robert until Friday August 22, The later hosts of the show were Henry Burbig, Gene London & Dom DeLuise.

Bob Keeshan spent almost four decades on the air as the gentle-voiced, grandfatherly figure of Captain Kangaroo. Like his contemporary Fred Rogers, he pioneered thoughtful children's programming in which he hoped to make the viewing audience feel as if they had a friend talking to them on the television screen. Charles Leroux of the Chicago Tribune described Keeshan's impact on children's television: "Ahead of his time in recognizing the importance of early learning [he] built confidence and intellectual development in children who were having too much fun to notice the lessons."
Born in , Keeshan lived for a while on Long Island, where his father, Joseph, worked as the manager of a grocery store. Eventually his father was laid off and the family moved to Forest Hills in the Queens section of Brooklyn. In school, Keeshan was encouraged by a teacher to get into radio because of his nice voice. Robert James Keeshan (June 27, – January 23, ) was an American television producer and actor. His first TV appearance was in , when he played the voiceless, horn-honking Clarabell the Clown, a role he created and played for five years on the Howdy Doody Show.
He achieved his greatest fame as the title character of the children's television program Captain Kangaroo, and became an icon for millions of baby boomers during its year run on the Columbia Broadcasting System (CBS) from through The show won five Emmy Awards, three Gabriel Awards and three Peabody Awards.
As his career developed Keeshan became an advocate, book author, lecturer, and lobbyist on behalf of childrens' issues. He was critical of modern TV programming, citing violence, and content. Whenever he lectured his topics included the importance of good parenting. In , he was named TV Father of the Year.
