BIOGRAPHY

Early Life, general and basic background information about Mary Mackillop.

Mary Helen Mackillop, known in life as Mother Mary of the Cross, was born on January 15th, , to Catholic Scottish parents, Alexander Mackillop and Flora MacDonald. Mary was born in Fitzroy, Melbourne and was the eldest child of eight. During their childhood, all eight children experienced an unsettled childhood, where the family home was neither happy nor wealthy due to the many failed business dealings of Mary's father. As Mary was the eldest of eight, at a young she gained an increasingly responsibility as a provider for her family, due to her father’s failings.  The Mackillop children rarely received any formal school based education, but they were well-educated in their faith and school work by their father.

At the age of fourteen, Mary began work as a clerk for Sands and Kenny Stationers in Melbourne. While she worked there, she gained responsibility and remained there for four years. As the needs of the family increase, Mary became the full-time primary provider for her needy family.

At the age of eighteen, Mary moved to the small and private town of

Mary was born in Victoria to Scottish immigrants. She was the eldest of eight children and spent her early years working to support her family. At the age of 24 she dedicated her life to God and took on the name “Mary of the Cross”.

Along with Fr Julian Tenison Woods, Mary opened a school in a disused stable in Penola, South Australia. Her vision was to provide education for underprivileged children. Many other women came to join her there, and Mary and Julian founded Australia’s first religious order: the Sisters of St Joseph.

Mary and the Sisters were committed to serving the poor – to going to where the need was and living amongst those in need. This took Mary all over Australia to many rural areas.

Mary faced fierce opposition throughout her life, which at one point culminated in her being excommunicated. In the face of trial, Mary was a model of forgiveness, insisting no ill be spoken of those who wronged her, while also remaining resolute in her convictions.

Mary was remarkable as a strong female leader in 19th century Australia. Education in this country is what it is today thanks to her dedication and determination.

St Mary Mackillop ()

While most Australians know Mary MacKillop&#;s name, many are unaware of exactly what she achieved in her lifetime nor why this humble but determined Melbourne born nun is set to become Australia&#;s first-ever saint.

Not only was Mary MacKillop the cofounder of the Josephites, the Sisters of St Joseph of the Sacred Heart but under her guidance the Order she established schools for the poor and underprivileged in SA and later across Victoria and Sydney. She and her sisters were also responsible for setting up orphanages and homes for the destitute as well as establishing refuges for ex-inmates of Australia&#;s grim Nineteenth Century prisons and shelters for former prostitutes.

In a world of strait-laced Victorians as well as a male-dominated Church, Mary MacKillop&#;s unwavering devotion to those on the margins of society met with considerable opposition. The antagonism to what she was trying to achieve came not only from the general public but from many of Australia&#;s Irish-born Bishops and the Church itself. But with her strength of faith in God and her vision for a better world for all, Mary MacKillop refused to be daunted.

With patience, a forgiv
