Rita Levi Montalcini nacque il 22 aprile del , a Torino. Nel si laureò alla facoltà di medicina di Torino, ma già dal primo anno di università lavorò nel laboratorio di Giuseppe Levi. Durante la sua specializzazione in Psichiatria e Neurologia, però, entrarono in vigore le leggi razziali e la Montalcini, di origine ebrea, fu costretta ad emigrare in Belgio, successivamente si nascose nelle campagne torinesi e infine a Firenze, dove collaborò come medico al servizio delle Forze Alleate. Rita non abbandonò mai le sue ricerche, allestendo un laboratorio clandestino, dove studiò embrioni di pollo e alla fine della guerra, nel &#;45, potè finalmente riprendere le sue attività regolarmente. Poco dopo ricevette un&#;offerta irrinunciabile dal Dipartimento di Zoologia della Washington University, dove trascorse oltre 30 anni. Rita Levi-Montalcini was the daughter of a wealthy Italian Jewish family. Her father, Adamo Levi, was an electrical engineer and mathematician and her mother, Adele Montalcini, was a painter. Together with her identical twin sister, Levi-Montalcini was the youngest of four children. During the Second World War, Levi-Montalcini and her family were forced to abandon Turin with the invasion of Italy by the German army. They fled first to Piemonte and then to Florence where they lived underground until the end of the war. Seeing her mother play second-fiddle to her father and the subordination of many women around her, Levi-Montalcini made the decision early in life never to marry or have children. She was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine jointly with colleague Stanley Cohen for the discovery of nerve growth factor (NGF).

An Italian and American biologist, Rita Levi-Montalcini (born ) discovered the nerve growth factor (NGF), a protein molecule that enhances differentiative processes of the sensory and sympathetic neurons and may exert a modulatory role on neuro-immuno-endocrine functions of vital importance in the regulation of homeostatic processes.
Rita Levi-Montalcini was born in Turin, Italy, on April 22, Together with her twin sister Paola, a renowned painter, she was the youngest in an upper-middle-class non-observant Jewish family which included a stern, industrialist father, a gentle but resourceful mother, a son, and three daughters, all of whom were gifted in either artistic or scientific pursuits. The profound gender inequality in her parents' household persuaded Rita (and Paola) that raising a family was incompatible with the devotion needed to pursue the call of creativity by a woman. The twin sisters were vindicated in their choice as each became famous in her respective career, while never regretting the choice of staying single.
