Before poets began to mount platforms in numbers, towards the turn of the last century, to present their poetry in a show of vocal pyrotechnics, before the term ‘performance poetry’ was coined and long before the advent of poetry slams, there was Jaap Blonk. Blonk, born in , is the Netherlands’ performance poet par excellence. For many years he has been sound poetry&#;s chief representative and as such has been a unique link between the early 20th-century movements of modernism and dadaism and our own time.
Possibly his presentation of his own and other authors’ sound poems has so profoundly impressed listeners because he began it at a time when poetry presentations rarely deviated from the common practice of a poet reading in subdued tones to a quietly attentive audience. With his inescapable presentations, Blonk jolted his listeners into fresh awareness and perceptiveness. His performance is hard to categorize: he hisses, he grumbles, he grates, he grunts, he bellows, in short, he employs every register of the human voice. Indeed, he really succeeds in dissolving the boundaries between poetry and music.

Jaap Blonk (born in Woerden, Netherlands) is a self-taught composer and poet. His studies in mathematics and musicology remained unfinished. In the early s he discovered the power and flexibility of his voice, and set out on a long-term research of phonetics and the possibilities of the human voice. From his functional phonetic notations he developed a variety of asemic signs for his visual poetry. A large selection of his AsemiQuads (quadratic drawings with short asemic statements) will be published in December of by Timglaset, Malmö, Sweden. BIOGRAFIE JAAP BLONK
Jaap Blonk (geboren in in Woerden) is componist, performer, dichter en beeldend kunstenaar.
Hij studeerde wiskunde en muziekwetenschap aan de universiteit, maar voltooide die studies niet.
In de loop van de 70er jaren ging hij saxofoon spelen en componeren.
Rond zijn 30e ontdekte hij zijn mogelijkheden als stem-performer, eerst bij de voordracht van poëzie en daarna in improvisaties en zijn eigen stukken. Bijna twintig jaar was de stem zijn voornaamste middel voor het ontdekken en ontwikkelen van nieuwe klanken.
Vanaf is Blonk met elektronica gaan werken, eerst op basis van samples van zijn eigen stem, daarna ook met de pure synthese van geluid.

In heeft hij een sabbatical genomen en een jaar niet opgetreden. Vanuit een hernieuwd enthousiasme voor de wiskunde stortte hij zich op het programmeren en verwierf zich een nieuwe vrijheid in het creëren van muziek, visuele animatie en poëzie.

Als vocalist is Jaap Blonk uniek door zijn uitstraling op het podium en zijn vrijmoedigheid in improvisaties, gepaard aan een scherp besef van structuur. Optredens brachten hem naar alle continenten. Het gebruik van live-elektronica heeft z
