Sam is the protagonist of the book, an independent boy who runs away from his crowded apartment home in New York City to live in the Catskill Mountains on his great-grandfather's old farming land. The reader is never given an exact age for Sam, but since the New York papers reporting on the mysterious boy living in the Catskill woods identify him as being sixteen or seventeen, the reader can assume he is a young tween or teen.
Sam is smart and resourceful, doing a significant amount of research at the library on survival skills before embarking on his adventure in order to ensure its success. He is capable and able to create a life for himself without man-made comforts. He is also a very reflective person who realizes at the end of the novel that is he somewhat lonely and that while life with society can be hard, it is also necessary. Her parents, Dr. Frank C. and Carolyn Johnson Craighead, were entomologists. The family spent summers on a farm in Pennsylvania, enabling Jean and her older twin brothers, Frank and John, to cultivate their interest in the natural sciences. While still in their teens, Frank and John were instrumental in bringing the art of falconry to the United States.
George received her bachelor's degree from Penn State University in , where she was voted the "most versatile senior woman." During the s she worked as a reporter for the International News Service, the Washington Post, and the Times-Herald in Washington, D.C.; as an artist for Pageant in New York City; and as an artist and reporter for the Newspaper Enterprise Association. My Side of the Mountain is a unique book in its formatting and themes, but it is also a classic example of a coming-of-age story. Sam Gribley is a teenager who is tired of his cramped life in New York City and is fearful of an open future ahead of him so he decides to run away from home. He chooses to go to a piece of family land in the Catskill mountains and begins his new life here.
Jean Craighead George wrote My Side of the Mountain to reflect her childhood wishes of living off the land and escaping society, thoughts that continue to permeate the heads of modern teenagers as much as they did during her childhood in the s. Sam is a representation of every person who has ever wished they could leave their stressful lives behind, if only temporarily.
