Evel Knievel was born as Robert Craig Knievel Jr. on October 17, , in Butte, Montana, a copper-mining town that, at the time, resembled a 19th century boom town. For most young men the future was limited to working in the mines, working in town, or working on one of the surrounding ranches. Though Knievel was a standout athlete in track and field and hockey, he struggled in school. His parents had divorced when he was young and he was raised by his grandparents.
