NOUS Y ÉTIONS - Le chanteur a enflammé la salle de concert parisienne samedi soir, accompagné par l'orchestre Al orchestra. L'interprète d'Adieu Mon Pays, devenu le symbole de l'exil des Pieds-Noirs, a livré un show mâtiné de musique arabo-andalouse aux airs de manifeste contre l'intolérance.
Le voici, en costume trois-pièces, chemise aussi blanche que ses cheveux. Enrico Macias, 80 ans, un des vétérans de la chanson populaire française, qui fit les beaux jours de l'émission de Maritie et Gilbert Carpentier, a enflammé l'Olympia samedi soir, devant un public totalement à l'unisson.

Enrico Macias is a French singer, musician and composer born in Constantine in Algeria, the 11th of December His real name is Gaston Ghrenassia, and he is the son of Sylvain and Suzanne Zaouch, a Jewish family of malouf musicians.
In parallel to a normal education, he also played a lot of music, and in particular guitar.
At first a teacher in , he joined Cheikh Raymond Leyris’s orchestra, the great master of malouf music in which his father played the violin.
The death of Cheikh Raymond, killed in June , led him to leave Algeria with his wife Suzy (Cheikh Raymond’s daughter). It’s on the &#;Ville d’Alger&#;’, name of the ship that brought them to France, that he wrote with his guitar the song «J’ai quitté mon pays, j’ai quitté ma maison » (I left my country, I left my home). He settled with his family in Argenteuil.
In Paris, Enrico worked irregularly, with small jobs and performed in cabarets, until he became noticed, and performed the first part of a concert of Gilbert Bécaud.

Born Gaston Ghrenassia to a Jewish Algerian family, he is noted for songs in multiple languages including Greek and Spanish.
Early Life
By age 15 Macias had begun to play guitar for orchestras. He migrated from Algeria to France with his wife Suzy Leyris in after the assassination of his father-in-law and musician Cheikh Raymon Leyris.
Career in France
Macias translated Arab, Judeo and Andalusian songs and also performed in cafes and cabarets. After the release of the song “Adieu Mon Pays”, he went on to release songs like “Bresil” and “Generosite”. He was also featured in many films and documentaries, including “Tutti Frutti”
The s saw him embark on tours in the Middle East, Turkey and America in ; he was once invited to sing for peace in Egypt during El Sadat’s era.
Honor
Macias earned a Prix Vincent Scotto award and a gold disc in He was also honored by UN secretary-generals Kofi Annan and Kurt Waldheim for his works in promoting peace around the world. He was honored as Roving Ambassador for Peace and the Defence of Children.
