Moriz Rosenthal (17 December – 3 September ) was a Polish pianist and composer. He was an outstanding pupil of Franz Liszt and a friend and colleague of some of the greatest musicians of his age, including Johannes Brahms, Johann Strauss, Anton Rubinstein, Hans von Bülow, Camille Saint-Saëns, Jules Massenet and Isaac Albéniz. Rosenthal was born in Lemberg, Austria-Hungary (later Lwów, Poland), where his father was professor at the chief academy. At eight years of age he commenced his piano studies under Galoth (–).
In , Rosenthal became a pupil of Karol Mikuli, Chopin's pupil and editor, who trained him along more academic lines at Lviv Conservatory. At the age of twelve he became a pupil of Rafael Joseffy in Vienna. His debut occurred in Vienna in His success was instantaneous, and after a tour of Roumania he was made Court Pianist of Roumania when he was fourteen years of age. From to he studied with Liszt at Weimar and Rome. He was associated with the great Hungarian master until , when Liszt died at Bayreuth. ROSENTHAL, MORIZ (Maurycy , –), pianist. Rosenthal was born in Lvov (Lemberg, Galicia), the son of a professor at the Lvov Academy of Music. He began playing the piano at the age of eight, and in entered the Academy, where he studied with its director, Karol Mikuli, from to In the following year, Rosenthal's family moved to Vienna, where he continued his studies with Joseffy and he gave his first recital in He then began to tour, finishing his studies with Liszt at Weimar, and in Rome. For six years, he abandoned the concert platform, dedicating himself to a study of philosophy. Returning to the concert platform in , he appeared as an artist in whom maturity of feeling and thought was matched by a virtuoso technique of the highest order; his reputation spread rapidly all over Europe and America, and was equaled only by that of *Godowsky. In , he published (with Schytte) the manual, Schule des hoeheren Klavierspiels. In , he took up residence in New York City, where one of his last pupils was the American pianist Charles Rosen, to whom he bequeathed the legacy of Liszt's teaching.
