NATSUME Soseki
Novelist. Born in Tokyo as the son of a town chief. After graduating from the English Department of the Imperial University in , he worked as a teacher at Matsuyama Middle School and the Fifth Higher School, and then went to London to study in Returning to Japan, he became an instructor at Tokyo University. After making his debut as a writer with "Wagahai wa neko de aru" (I Am a Cat) (), he became a storywriter under contract with the Asahi Shimbun in After publishing novels such as "Sanshiro" (), "Sorekara" (And Then) (), and "Mon" (The Gate) (), he suffered a severe illness. In "Kokoro" (The Heart) (), "Michikusa" (Grass on the Wayside) (), "Meian" (Light and Darkness) (), and other works, he focused on psychological depictions of modern intellectuals in Japan. His style of expression, which differed from that of the naturalistic writers popular at that time, was called Yoyu-ha. He has been evaluated as one of the great storywriters of modern Japan. Among his former students are Sohei Morita, Toyotaka Komiya, and many other storywriters and literary men.

Born Natsume Kinnosuke on February 9th, in what is now modern-day Shinjuku, he was the youngest of six kids and had a difficult childhood. He was sent out for adoption as an infant, a not-uncommon practice of the time, to the Shiobaras, acquaintances of his parents who had serious marital problems (Marcus). Natsume Sōseki was a gifted scholar despite his tumultuous childhood. Though he first pursued education at Nishimatsu Gakusha in Chinese studies, he dropped it after two months and, at the age of 17, went on to study at University Preparatory Gate (later renamed Daiichi Koto Junior High School) where he excelled in English (Shinjuku City). Natsume Soseki (real name: Kinnosuke) was born in in the Ushigome Babashita-Yokomachi neighborhood in the city of Edo (now Kikuicho in Shinjuku City, Tokyo) as the fifth son of the local headman, Natsume Kohei. At the age of one, Soseki was adopted by the Shiobara family, who headed the Taisoji Temple neighborhood in Yotsuya. However, his adoptive parents divorced when he was nine years old, and he was returned to his biological family.
While Soseki was a student at the First Higher Middle School, he met poet Masaoka Shiki, who introduced him to haiku. Soseki would go on to remain close friends with Shiki until his death. Soseki graduated from the English literature department of the College of Letters at Imperial University (now the University of Tokyo) in and advanced to graduate school, working as a schoolteacher in Matsuyama and Kumamoto after graduating.
