Biography of Queen Elizabeth I of England and Ireland
Calendar of State Papers of Spain. 21 Jan Wien, Rep. P.C., Fasc. , No. 3. Eustace Chapuys (age 46) to the Emperor (age 35).
The good [her step-mother] Queen (deceased) breathed her last at 2 o'clock in the afternoon. Eight hours afterwards, by the [her father] King's (age 44) express commands, the inspection of her body was made, without her confessor or physician or any other officer of her household being present, save the fire-lighter in the house, a servant of his, and a companion of the latter, who proceeded at once to open the body. Neither of them had practised chirurgy, and yet they had often performed the same operation, especially the principal or head of them, who, after making the examination, went to the Bishop of Llandaff, the Queen's confessor, and declared to him in great secrecy, and as if his life depended on it, that he had found the Queen's body and the intestines perfectly sound and healthy, as if nothing had happened, with the single exception of the heart, which was completely black, and of a most hideous aspect; after washing it in three different waters, and fi
ELIZABETH I, Queen of England and Ireland, born on Sunday the 7th of September , and, like all the Tudors except Henry VII, at Greenwich Palace, was the only surviving child of Henry VIII by his second queen, Anne Boleyn. With such a mother and with Cranmer as her godfather she represented from her birth the principle of revolt from Rome, but the opponents of that movement attached little importance to her advent into the world. Charles V's ambassador, Chapuys, hardly deigned to mention the fact that the king's amie had given birth to a daughter, and both her parents were bitterly disappointed with her sex. She was, however, given precedence over Mary, her elder sister by sixteen years, and Mary never forgave the infant's offence. Even this dubious advantage only lasted three years until Elizabeth's mother was beheaded.
Elizabeth thus lost all hereditary title to the throne, and her early years of childhood can hardly have been happier than Mary's. Nor was her legitimacy ever legally established; but after Jane Seymour's death, when Henry seemed likely to have no further issue, she was by act of parliament [Act of Succession
Queen Elizabeth I was born on September 7, , to the monarch King Henry the Eighth and his second wife, Anne Boleyn. Her birth was not a celebrated one as the king coveted a son to carry on the name of the family. She was the final ruler from the Tudors and fifth in line. Her education was not lacking in any way and she was raised by nurses and governesses till she reached majority.
Queen Elizabeth I was often hailed as the Virgin Queen, Gloriana and Good queen Bess. She popularised the virginal look as well as the practice. The crown did not come easily to her. After her mother, Anne Boleyn was beheaded on suspicion of incest and treason, she was declared as illegitimate and her half brother even wrote her out of his will.
