My Secret Bully

April 13,
My Secret Bully by Trudy Ludwig is a contemporary realistic fiction book. My Secret Bully is about a young girl who is bullied by her very own best friend. Monica and Katie have been best friends since Kindergarten but ever since Katie has made new friends, she is only nice to Monica when they are alone. Monica becomes sick and upset and eventually tells her mother what has been going on after missing so much time at school. Her mother gives her advice and Monica takes it. The next day at school Monica tells Katie that she will not stand for being bullied anymore and that real friends do not bully one another. At the end of the book, Monica is no longer friends with Katie but Monica makes new real friends and she never wants to speak to Katie again.

The general age group for My Secret Bully would primary into intermediate. I think this because the words that are mention is this book may be too advanced for a younger child.

The pictures in this book were colored with paint. The pictures are made with different colors, but each shade is dark. All of the faces in this book are unhappy and the lines are not definite.

I wanted to address the issue of intentional and unintentional social exclusion that most kids (and adults) experience at some point in their lives. Who hasn&#;t felt invisible at school, at work, or at some social gathering they&#;ve attended? And this feeling of invisibility can be particularly difficult for quiet, shy, or sensitive children who have so much t

Trucy Ludwig wrote the book, The Invisible Boy, to show how a small act of kindness can change someone&#;s life. No one ever notices Brian, not even his teacher at times. The other kids don&#;t include him in any games or invite him to their birthday parties. A new student arrives and does not quite fit in at first either. Brian is the first person to be kind to Justin, the new student. Justin returns the favor by being his friend and helping him stand out. I would use this book as a way to show the students how important is to be kind to people and relate it to the content area of English Language Arts. I would make a big T-Chart poster with kind actions on one side and mean actions on the other side. I would give each student two sticky notes to write a short example of a kind action and a mean action. Then they would stick them on the correct side of the poster. The illustrations portray how Brian started out as

Calling the Wind: A Story of Healing and Hope

Add this one to your bookshelf about grief. A box of tissues, please!

When Mother passes, this traditional Japanese family tries to find solace in different ways, with each finding it in a phone booth in a garden.

Based on an actual phone booth, this fictional story tugs at the heartstrings. Ludwig's spare text is just right, guiding the reader to explore the emotions felt while grieving. She leaves much of the details of the story to the amazing Kathryn Otoshi to tell visually. Using Kuretake watercolors, color pencils, and pens, there is a dreamy, subtle quality to each illustration. Each family member is shown grieving in their own way - in shades of yellow, pink, and blue. Not at all a sad story, it is very uplifting to watch this family who miss their matriarch so deeply come to terms with her loss, yet move forward with her.

Useful for counselors and therapists, this could also be used by families to discuss death of a family member or beloved pet. While there are a couple of other books about this phone booth in Japan, only one is for children: The Phone Booth in Mr. Hirota's Garden by Heather Smith (Orca, ).
