Charlie Wedemeyer
Throughout his lifetime Charlie Wedemeyer has been an inspiration to others. It began with his high school sports career, carried into his college football career, followed by teaching and coaching. Today, he inspires others through his will to live.
Wedemeyer, now 59, has lived with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, or Lou Gehrig&#;s disease, since he was 32 years old. At the time of his diagnosis, doctors said Wedemeyer would only live one to three more years&#;it&#;s been almost thirty.
&#;They throw up their hands now,&#; Lucy Wedemeyer said in a Detroit News article on December 30, &#;He&#;s outlived all the expectations.&#;
Growing up in Hawaii, Wedemeyer earned nine prep letters (three years each in each football, basketball and baseball) at Punahou High School . He then went on to play football at Michigan State under then head coach Duffy Daugherty, where he lettered in and His accomplishments were recognized as he was named Prep Player of the Decade for the &#;s in his native Hawaii .
Wedemeyer came to State as a quarterback, but standing , Daugherty realized Wedemeyer wouldn&#;t be tall enough to compete at quarterback in the Big Ten. He went from

Charlie, you and I had alot in common. God put you in my life for a season, so that I could believe it was possible for me to change in areas I didn't believe could to changed. I was blessed to be a part of your life, along with Lisa. You blessed us as my Best Man at our wedding, you blessed us when you received Malia(Mimi) and Cecilia(Ceci) on your chest just after there birth, you blessed us with laughter nearly losing our life in the process or laughing so hard we all thought we would die.
You taught us what hard work was, beginning before the sun rises, not ending till midnight or later, while Lucy and you did most of the work. For both of you though, it wasn't work, it was service or serving others. Lucy and you modeled Jesus, He came to serve, not to be served.
This is what I will take from you Charlie, I will serve as you have served.
Lord, I ask for your continued blessings in the lives of Lucy, Carrie and Kale, spouses, children and great-grandchildren yet to come. May they all come to serve You and others even greater then Lucy and Charlie.

About five minutes after I moved to San Jose in , someone told me about Charlie Wedemeyer.
“He’s the most amazing guy you’ll ever meet,” the person told me.
I met him. He was. And he ranked No. 1 in that category until his death Thursday morning at age 64 of complications from pneumonia. Services are tentatively scheduled for June 19 in Los Gatos.
There are so many great Charlie Wedemeyer stories. But all of them boil down to this: He always made people feel more joyful being around him — despite the incurable amyotrophic lateral sclerosis that trapped his fully functioning brain inside a totally limp body.
Pity? Forget about it. Charlie didn’t diplomatically recognize the word.
It must have been awful in , when as a healthy year-old high school football coach, Charlie was told he had ALS — often known as Lou Gehrig’s disease. I’m sure there were tears between Charlie and his wife, Lucy. But somewhere along the way, they decided that Charlie was going to persevere — and the family would help him do so. No matter what.

Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) couldn't bring Charlie down. The transition and the sacrifices were difficult. The life-and-death struggle was constant, but the ordeal evolved into a humbling bond with Jesus Christ. Because of these things, this man who could not speak, spoke the loudest.
His family and grandchildren were his joy, and his teams were his pride. Football players, students, friends old & new, all would stop by and see the coach - and all became family, or 'ohana, in the Hawaiian culture.
It is hard to tell which is more glorious, the vision that many old-time Hawaiian sports fans have of Charlie Wedemeyer, or the one held by generations of Los Gatos High football players.
