Sheikh el-Zakzaky: Through the eyes of his followers
Abuja, Nigeria – Nearly members of the Islamic Movement in Nigeria (IMN) hit the streets of the Nigerian capital, Abuja, in protest this week.
Young women wailed, while young men held up posters. From the city’s central mosque to the federal secretariat, the throng marched and chanted, calling for the release of their leader, Sheikh Ibrahim el-Zakzaky, a Shia Muslim scholar.
For the past eight months, el-Zakzaky and his wife have been held at an undisclosed location in what the Nigerian Department of State Security Services refers to as “protective custody”.
El-Zakzaky was arrested in December , during a three-day encounter in which the Nigerian army stands accused of killing hundreds of members of the Movement in the northern city of Zaria in the state of Kaduna. The IMN calls it a massacre.

“They are calling it a clash,” says Musa Bangi, a year-old retired civil servant and follower of el-Zakzaky. “How is it a clash when it was mostly our members who were killed?”

His parents were Qur&#;anic scholars, who engaged in its exegesis. At the same time, they employed farming as a means of livelihood. Therefore, Sheikh Zakzaky started learning (and memorizing) the Quran at a very early age from his father.
While still learning the Quran under his father, he also attended another Quranic school in his neighborhood. He also accompanied his father alongside his brothers to the farm to give a helping hand.
It is a laid down principle in Sheikh Zakzaky&#;s family that a child should first memorize the Quran by heart before being allowed to learn other Islamic books from other learned scholars. The Sheikh memorized the holy Quran at 14 and soon after that he began to learn other Islamic books from his father, his mother and other well learned scholars in his hometown, Zaria.

A Nigerian court has acquitted the leader of a banned Shia group Islamic Movement of Nigeria (IMN) of all eight criminal charges against him, defence and prosecution lawyers said.
Ibrahim el-Zakzaky had been in detention since when he was arrested after a clash in which the army killed an estimated people at an IMN compound and a nearby mosque and burial ground in northern Kaduna state.
