Early Life and InfluencesFrank Abagnale Jr. was born on April 27, , in Bronxville, New York. As the third of four children, Abagnale grew up in New York City. At the age of 12, his parents divorced, deeply affecting him. He attempted to reunite his parents but his efforts were unsuccessful.
Abagnale's father was a successful businessman, well-versed in finance and interpersonal skills. From his father, Frank gained valuable knowledge and experience that later proved instrumental in his criminal career. Ironically, his father became his first victim of fraud.

Who Is Frank Abagnale?
The son of a stationery business owner, Frank Abagnale entered the world of crime as a youngster with credit card and check schemes. He later impersonated various white-collar professionals, creating an overseas trail, and was arrested at 21 by the French police. Abagnale was eventually hired by the FBI as a consultant and then started his own agency, educating corporations, financial institutions and government organizations on how to detect and handle fraudulence. A portion of his life was the subject of the popular film Catch Me If You Can.

Abagnale would later say via his website that some of the details in the book were exaggerated, with the preface also stating that certain details of the story were altered to protect other parties.

The real Carl Hanratty is a composite of a number of FBI agents who worked to catch Abagnale, most notably FBI Agent Joseph Shea. Special Agent Shea was the head of the FBI investigative team chasing after Frank and had spent several years looking for him. Agent Joe Shea also acted as his main contact at the Bureau, similar to Hanratty (Tom Hanks) in the movie. For some time, Shea had believed that Frank was an experienced criminal in his mid-thirties, not realizing that his suspect was only a teenager.

Early Life
Frank William Abagnale was born on April 27th, in New Rochelle, New York. Named after his father, who owned a stationery business, Frank was the third of four children. His mother, Paulette, was of French-Algerian extraction. The couple met while Frank, Sr. was on active service in Algiers during World War 2. They were soon married despite a thirteen -year age gap.
Frank, Sr. proved to be a very successful businessman with the stationery store doing exceptionally well. As a result, the family lived in a large home and, although the Abagnale’s were by no means rich, Frank. Jr and his siblings had a comfortable childhood.
