Every weekday morning for two-and-a-half-years, I started my day the exact same way: calling Sherle, my boss, to check in. Sherle would pick up the phone from his rent-controlled studio in New York—he refused on principle to live in Washington, D.C., even though he was a co-founder of a think tank based in Washington, D.C.—and clear his throat loudly and thoroughly. Then, in the most unforgettable voice, an inimitable mix of his Nebraska roots and his adopted New York home, he would say, “HellooOOOoo,” undulating the sound of the final “o.” This routine became so drilled into my head that at times I found myself answering my own phone with a throat clear and an undulating hello; still, to this day, if I’m not paying attention, the Sherle hello, as it should be known, will sneak up on me when I pick up a call from a friend.
Sherle passed away unexpectedly last week. He was not a household name by any stretch, but he was an intellectual inspiration and quiet backer of many household names in the world of politics and ideas. Colleagues frequently referred to him the “smartest person you’ve never heard of” in the policy world, and I came to believe that this was probably true. Wh

Sherle R. Schwenninger directed New America's Economic Growth and American Strategy Programs. He was founding director of the World Economic Roundtable, a program that brought together thought leaders from business, finance, and public policy in regular meetings to remap the global economy after the Great Recession. One of the founders of New America, he served as treasurer from to and also as director of the Bernard L. Schwartz Fellows Program.
Schwenninger was founding editor of World Policy Journal from to , and served as director of the World Policy Institute at The New School from to He was also director of the Institute's Policy Studies Program and its Transnational Academic Program. More recently, Schwenninger served as senior program coordinator for the Project on Development, Trade, and International Finance at the Council on Foreign Relations, and has been a founding member of and adviser to the EU Rim Policy and Investment Council. Schwenninger writes and speaks frequently on questions involving the U.S. and world economies and on issues related to American foreign policy and international economic strategy.

Sherle Ray Schwenninger, age 69, died at his home in New York City, New York, on Wednesday, September 16, He was born at Elwood, Nebraska, in the Maternity Hospital owned by his Great-aunt Ella Seiz to Ivan and Pansy (Mills) Schwenninger on February 19, He attended his first year of school at Rural District 54 west of Elwood and finished his education at Elwood High School as valedictorian of the class of He was a member of the inaugural Centennial College, a non-traditional course of study at the University of Nebraska, Lincoln and graduated in with High Distinction. He earned his Juris Doctor Degree at George Washington University Law School in
Sherle worked hard on the family farm and found pleasure in sports. He was the pitcher or played first base for his baseball team from a young age and practiced basketball for hours. In high school he was the shooting guard for the basketball team and held the scoring record for nearly 30 years. He was the quarterback on the Elwood Pirate football team and used his expertise to analyze and enjoy Nebraska football throughout his life.
