Artist Jung Yeondoo invites you to look closer at your neighbors — the strangers you might pass in an apartment elevator or a busy street — and imagine their dreams. This exhibition in PEM’s Jeffrey P. Beale Gallery highlights two major multipart photographic works: Evergreen Tower () and Bewitched (ongoing).
After attending art school in London, Jung returned to Seoul in the early s and discovered that the city had become a “concrete forest” of high-rise apartment complexes. Among his new neighbors, Jung observed that the comforts of urban, middle-class life had also produced a sense of anonymity and isolation. Driven by curiosity, Jung began to ask the people around him about their hopes and aspirations and began using photography to connect with others.
The subjects that appear in Jung’s photographs are ordinary families and individuals with whom he collaborates to tell a deeper story. Whether asking people to open up their living room or share their innermost dreams, Jung uses the camera to show people as they are, but also as they wish to be seen.

Since , South Korean artist Jung Yeondoo has visited six different countries to make people’s dreams come true. In his Bewitched series, he asks local people about their wishes for their future and then makes them come true with a pair of photographs: the first, a portrait of the person in their everyday life and the second, showing their dream or fantasy. Bewitched #2 Seoul shows a Baskin Robbins employee at her job next to her dream of going to the Arctic. Her change in clothing, accessories, and setting changes how we see her and shows us a part of her that we might not know about upon first glance. Jung uses costumes, settings, and props to transform a scene from everyday life into the individual’s dream.
Speaking about his inspiration, Jung said in a profile, “I started this project with an artist’s curiosity about wanting to know about the lives of people you just pass every day,” he said. “It’s not about a happy perspective or a negative perspective . . . It is more about [my] attempts as an artist to communicate with someone else.”

「ヴェネチアビエンナーレ」や「上海ビエンナーレ」、「ソウル・メディアシティ・ビエンナーレ」といった国際的な場で作品を発表。近年はUlsan Art Museum(韓国・ウルサン(蔚山))やTotal Museum of Contemporary Art（ソウル）で個展を開催。これまでに「上海ビエンナーレ」における「Asia Europe Culture Foundation Award」のほか、「Artist of the Year 」（韓国国立現代美術館(MMCA)）、年の「Today’s Young Artist Award」（韓国文化観光部）を受賞。彼の作品は ニューヨーク近代美術館(MoMA)やSt. Louis Art Museum、韓国国立現代美術館(MMCA)に所蔵されている。
